About Budapest holidays

Budapest is one of Europe’s most rewarding city break destinations, combining grand architecture, riverside views, thermal baths and a strong café culture. Split by the River Danube, the city brings together historic Buda on the west bank and lively Pest on the east, connected by landmark bridges including the Chain Bridge.

Many first visits begin around the Castle District, where cobbled streets lead to Buda Castle, Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion, with wide views across the river to the Hungarian Parliament Building. On the Pest side, the Parliament is one of the city’s most recognisable sights, while nearby St Stephen’s Basilica and the elegant boulevards around Andrássy Avenue show Budapest at its most refined. Heroes’ Square and City Park are also worth setting aside time for, especially if you plan to visit Széchenyi Thermal Bath.

Thermal bathing is part of everyday life in Budapest, and the city has several historic bathhouses, from the large outdoor pools at Széchenyi to the atmospheric Gellért and Rudas baths. They are popular with visitors but remain an authentic part of local culture, making them a memorable addition to a short break.

Budapest is also a strong choice for food and drink. Traditional Hungarian dishes such as goulash, paprika-rich stews and chimney cake are easy to find, alongside modern restaurants, wine bars and relaxed cafés. The Great Market Hall is a useful stop for food shopping, local produce and souvenirs, while Jewish Quarter streets are known for casual dining, independent bars and ruin pubs set in characterful old buildings.

For shopping, visitors can browse international brands along Váci Street and around major shopping centres, or look for design shops, antiques and local crafts in smaller neighbourhood streets. The city is easy to explore on foot in central areas, with trams, metro lines and buses helping you reach attractions further out.

Whether you are interested in history, architecture, spa culture, river views or simply wandering between cafés and courtyards, Budapest offers a rich and varied city holiday with plenty to fill a long weekend or a longer stay.
