About Italy holidays

Italy is one of Europe’s most varied holiday destinations, combining historic cities, dramatic countryside, long coastlines and a food culture that is a major part of the experience. For UK holidaymakers, it works well for everything from city breaks and cultural touring to relaxed lakeside stays, rural escapes and beach holidays.

Rome, Florence and Venice are among the country’s best-known city destinations. Rome is ideal for ancient history, with the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Vatican City close to lively piazzas and traditional trattorias. Florence is the heart of the Renaissance, known for its art galleries, churches and elegant streets, while Venice offers canals, palaces and a setting unlike anywhere else in Europe. Milan suits travellers interested in fashion, design, shopping and access to the Italian Lakes.

Italy’s regions each have a strong identity. Tuscany is popular for rolling hills, vineyards, medieval towns and farmhouse stays, while Umbria offers a quieter feel with hilltop villages and rural scenery. The Italian Lakes, including Como, Garda and Maggiore, are known for mountain views, boat trips, gardens and pretty waterfront towns. Further south, the Amalfi Coast has cliffside villages and coastal views, while Naples is a lively gateway to Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius and islands such as Capri and Ischia.

Beach holidays are a genuine part of Italy’s appeal, particularly in Sardinia, Sicily, Puglia, Calabria and along parts of the Adriatic and Ligurian coasts. Sardinia is known for clear water and sandy coves, Sicily combines beaches with ancient ruins and volcanic landscapes, and Puglia offers whitewashed towns, olive groves and a long coastline.

Food is central to travel in Italy, but it varies hugely by region. Visitors can enjoy fresh pasta in Emilia-Romagna, pizza in Naples, seafood on the coasts, risotto in the north, Tuscan wines, Sicilian pastries and excellent coffee almost everywhere. Holidays here can be as relaxed or as active as you like, whether you are exploring museums, taking scenic train journeys, walking through vineyards, visiting archaeological sites or simply enjoying a long lunch in a local square.
