Calabria sits at the toe of Italy’s boot, between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas, and offers a rewarding mix of dramatic coastline, hilltop towns, rugged mountains and deeply rooted southern Italian culture. It is less polished than some of Italy’s better-known regions, which is part of its appeal for travellers who enjoy authentic places, local food and scenic exploring.

The region is best known for its coast, with clear water, rocky coves and long sandy stretches around resorts such as Tropea, Capo Vaticano and Scilla. Tropea is one of Calabria’s most attractive towns, with a historic centre set above the sea, narrow lanes, small piazzas and views towards the Aeolian Islands on clear days. Scilla, on the Strait of Messina, is known for its old fishing district of Chianalea, where houses appear to rise directly from the water.

Inland Calabria has a very different character. The Sila and Aspromonte national parks offer forests, mountain villages, walking routes and a cooler escape from the coast. Towns such as Gerace, Stilo and Morano Calabro are good for sightseeing, with medieval streets, churches, viewpoints and a slower pace of life. Reggio Calabria, the region’s largest city, has a seafront promenade, archaeological museum and views across to Sicily. The museum’s Riace Bronzes are among southern Italy’s most important ancient Greek finds.

Food is central to a Calabria holiday. The region is known for bold, spicy flavours, especially ’nduja, a soft chilli-spiked salami from Spilinga, as well as red onions from Tropea, fresh seafood, handmade pasta and robust local wines. Restaurants are often relaxed and traditional, with menus shaped by what is grown, caught or produced nearby.

Shopping is generally low-key rather than designer-focused, with local markets, food shops, ceramics, olive oil, preserves and regional specialities making good things to take home. Popular things to do include coastal drives, boat trips, visiting historic villages, hiking in the national parks and exploring archaeological and religious sites. Calabria suits visitors who want southern Italy with striking scenery, strong traditions and a more local feel than the country’s busiest holiday regions.
