Kotor Area Holidays

The Kotor Area is one of Montenegro’s most distinctive holiday regions, wrapped around the dramatic Bay of Kotor where steep limestone mountains drop straight into calm, fjord-like water. It is a good choice for travellers who want scenery, history and easy-going waterfront days rather than a conventional beach resort holiday.

Kotor is the main centre and the natural base for many visitors. Its UNESCO-listed Old Town is a maze of stone lanes, small squares, churches, cafés and restaurants, all enclosed by medieval walls. For one of the best views in Montenegro, walk up the hillside fortifications towards San Giovanni Fortress, especially early or late in the day when it is cooler. Along the waterfront, Dobrota offers a quieter place to stay, with bay views, swimming spots and promenadeside restaurants.

Further around the bay, Perast is a highlight: a small, elegant town known for its Venetian-style architecture and views across to the island church of Our Lady of the Rocks, reached by short boat trips. Risan, Prčanj and Stoliv are quieter options with a more local feel, while Tivat brings a more contemporary side to the region, with Porto Montenegro’s marina, waterside dining and useful transport links.

Beaches in the Kotor Area are typically small, pebbly or made up of bathing platforms rather than wide sandy stretches. The bay’s sheltered water is pleasant for swimming, paddleboarding and kayaking, and boat trips are a popular way to see the coastline from a different angle. For more open-sea beaches, many visitors take day trips towards the Budva Riviera.

Food is a key part of a stay here, with menus often featuring grilled fish, seafood, risotto, local cheeses and Montenegrin wines. Evenings are generally relaxed, centred on dinner by the water, a stroll through the old towns or a drink overlooking the bay.

The Kotor Area also works well for exploring beyond the coast. Lovćen National Park, the old royal capital of Cetinje and viewpoints above the bay are all popular day trips, making the region a strong choice for a scenic Montenegro holiday with plenty to see without constant long journeys.
