Agadir is one of Morocco’s best-known coastal cities, set on the Atlantic in the Souss-Massa region with the Anti-Atlas mountains rising inland. It is genuinely popular for beach holidays, thanks to its long sandy bay, seafront promenade and generally mild climate, but there is more to the city than sunbathing. Compared with Marrakech or Fez, Agadir feels modern and spacious, largely because it was rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1960.
A good place to start is the hilltop Agadir Oufella, the remains of the old kasbah. The original fortress walls survived in part, and the viewpoint looks across the city, the harbour and the sweep of the bay. For a sense of local culture, the Museum of Amazigh Culture introduces the traditions, jewellery and crafts of Morocco’s Berber communities, which are central to the identity of the region.
Agadir’s main seafront area is easy to explore on foot, with cafés, restaurants and hotels close to the promenade. The marina has a more polished feel, with places to eat, shop and watch the boats. Talborjt is a useful neighbourhood for a more local atmosphere, while Founty is known for larger resort-style hotels. For shopping, Souk El Had is the city’s standout experience: a large, organised market selling spices, olives, leather goods, ceramics, clothing, household items and fresh produce. It is a good place to practise polite bargaining and enjoy everyday Moroccan city life.
Food in Agadir is a real highlight. Seafood is a natural choice here, particularly around the port and seafront, but you will also find Moroccan staples such as tagines, couscous, grilled meats, harira soup and fresh mint tea. Many restaurants cater well to visitors while still offering familiar local flavours.
Popular things to do include walking the promenade, visiting the recreated Medina d’Agadir, relaxing in a hammam, browsing the souk and taking excursions into the surrounding region. Paradise Valley, the Souss-Massa National Park and the walled town of Taroudant are among the best-known day trip options. Agadir suits travellers who want an easy-going Moroccan holiday with beach time, manageable sightseeing and access to the landscapes and culture of southern Morocco.
