About Morocco holidays

Morocco is one of North Africa’s most varied holiday destinations, combining atmospheric cities, mountain scenery, desert landscapes and a long Atlantic and Mediterranean coastline. For UK holidaymakers, it offers a rewarding mix of cultural sightseeing, relaxed resort stays and adventurous touring, with a distinctive character shaped by Arab, Amazigh, African and European influences.

Marrakech is the best-known city break choice, famous for its souks, courtyard riads, gardens and the lively Jemaa el-Fnaa square. It works well for a short escape or as a starting point for excursions into the Atlas Mountains. Further north, Fes offers a more traditional feel, with one of the world’s most fascinating old medinas, while Rabat, the capital, is calmer and known for historic landmarks and an attractive coastal setting. Casablanca is Morocco’s largest city and is often visited for the Hassan II Mosque and its modern urban atmosphere.

For beach holidays, Agadir is the main resort, with a wide sandy bay, seafront hotels and a relaxed feel. Essaouira, on the Atlantic coast, is smaller and more characterful, with a fortified old town, seafood restaurants and a breezy coastline that appeals to walkers and watersports enthusiasts. Tangier and the northern coast offer a different side of the country, with Mediterranean influences and good links to Spain.

Away from the cities and coast, Morocco’s landscapes are a major part of its appeal. The High Atlas Mountains offer dramatic passes, traditional villages and walking opportunities, while the Sahara region around Merzouga and Zagora is popular for desert camps, camel rides and stargazing. Many visitors combine these areas on escorted tours or private itineraries.

Food is another highlight. Tagines, couscous, harira soup, grilled meats, fresh salads and mint tea are widely enjoyed, with regional flavours varying from the mountains to the coast. Shopping is part of the experience too, especially for ceramics, leather goods, spices, textiles and lamps, though bargaining is common in many souks.

Morocco suits couples, friends, culture seekers, solo travellers and those looking for a mix of relaxation and exploration. It is a destination where planning your route carefully helps, as distances can be longer than they appear, but the variety makes it especially rewarding.

Morocco Holidays FAQs

Marrakech is a popular first choice for culture, souks and easy excursions to the Atlas Mountains. Agadir suits travellers looking for a beach-based holiday, while Essaouira offers a relaxed coastal break with a historic old town. Fes is ideal if you want a deeper traditional medina experience, and desert trips are often added as part of a longer itinerary.
