About Marrakech holidays

Marrakech is one of Morocco’s most atmospheric city break destinations, known for its historic medina, lively souks, courtyard riads and striking backdrop of the Atlas Mountains. It is a city best explored at a slower pace, with plenty of time for wandering, pausing for mint tea and taking in the contrast between centuries-old streets and elegant modern districts.

The heart of Marrakech is Jemaa el-Fna, the famous main square at the edge of the medina. By day it is a busy meeting point, while in the evening it fills with food stalls, musicians and storytellers. From here, narrow lanes lead into the souks, where you will find leather goods, lanterns, ceramics, spices, textiles and metalwork. Bargaining is part of the experience, but it is worth taking your time and comparing quality before buying.

Marrakech has a rich architectural and cultural heritage. The Koutoubia Mosque, with its distinctive minaret, is one of the city’s key landmarks. Visitors can also explore the ornate Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the Ben Youssef Madrasa, all of which offer a glimpse into the city’s history and craftsmanship. For a quieter side of Marrakech, the Majorelle Garden is a popular escape, combining bold blue buildings, cacti, palms and a museum dedicated to Berber culture.

The city’s neighbourhoods each have their own feel. The medina is the most traditional area and a good choice for riad stays, while Gueliz offers wider streets, cafés, galleries, boutiques and a more contemporary atmosphere. Hivernage is known for larger hotels and polished restaurants, making it convenient for travellers who prefer modern comforts.

Food is a major part of a Marrakech holiday. Expect tagines, couscous, grilled meats, fresh salads, pastries and fragrant Moroccan spices. Dining ranges from simple street food and family-run restaurants to stylish rooftop terraces overlooking the medina. Many visitors also enjoy a cookery class, a hammam experience or a guided walking tour to better understand local traditions.

Marrakech is an excellent choice for culture, shopping, history and memorable city sightseeing, with day trips possible to the Atlas Mountains, Ourika Valley or nearby desert landscapes.
