About Santa Cruz holidays

Santa Cruz is a small, coastal resort on Madeira’s east coast, close to the island’s airport and within easy reach of Funchal, Machico and the wilder landscapes of the east. It has a relaxed, local feel rather than a busy resort atmosphere, making it a good choice for holidaymakers who want a quieter base with straightforward access to the rest of Madeira.

The seafront is the heart of Santa Cruz, with a pleasant promenade, cafés and views across the Atlantic. The main bathing area, Praia das Palmeiras, is a typical Madeiran beach with pebbles rather than sand, plus sea access and a lido-style area that suits confident swimmers when conditions are calm. As with much of Madeira, the coastline is dramatic and volcanic, so it is better for scenic swims, sea views and walks than traditional sandy beach days.

The town centre is compact and easy to explore on foot. Around the main square you’ll find the parish church, small shops, bakeries and restaurants serving Madeiran dishes such as grilled fish, espetada, limpets and bolo do caco. Evenings are generally low-key, with meals by the seafront or a drink in a local bar rather than late-night clubbing.

Santa Cruz works particularly well for visitors who plan to get out and explore. Machico, one of Madeira’s oldest settlements, is nearby, while the striking Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula is a popular day out for walkers and photographers. Inland, the hills around Santo da Serra offer cooler air, countryside scenery and access to walking routes. Funchal is also close enough for gardens, museums, shopping and boat trips, without needing to stay in the capital.

One thing to be aware of is the proximity to Madeira Airport. This is very convenient for short transfers, but some visitors may notice aircraft noise depending on where they stay. Overall, Santa Cruz is best suited to travellers looking for a calm Madeiran holiday base, good local food, coastal scenery and easy access to walking, sightseeing and nearby towns.

Santa Cruz Holidays FAQs

Santa Cruz has coastal bathing areas, including Praia das Palmeiras, but the beach is pebbly rather than sandy. It is good for sea views, swimming when conditions are suitable and relaxing by the waterfront, but it is not a classic sandy beach resort.
