Romania is a varied and rewarding choice for a holiday, combining historic cities, mountain scenery, rural traditions and a stretch of Black Sea coastline. It suits travellers who like culture, nature and good value, with plenty to explore beyond the best-known sights.

Bucharest is often the main starting point. The capital has grand boulevards, lively cafés, museums and striking architecture, including the vast Palace of Parliament. Its Old Town is compact and easy to explore, with restaurants, bars and historic churches tucked between restored buildings.

Transylvania is one of Romania’s most popular regions, known for medieval towns, fortified churches and dramatic landscapes. Brașov, Sibiu and Sighișoara are excellent bases for wandering cobbled streets, visiting colourful squares and discovering Saxon heritage. Bran Castle is commonly linked with the Dracula legend, though the wider region is just as interesting for its history and scenery as for its folklore.

For outdoor holidays, the Carpathian Mountains offer hiking, wildlife watching and scenic drives. Areas such as the Bucegi and Făgăraș Mountains are especially popular in the warmer months, while some resorts also have winter sports facilities. Nature lovers may also be drawn to the Danube Delta, a UNESCO-listed wetland near the Black Sea, where boat trips reveal reed beds, birdlife and quiet fishing villages.

Romania’s coast is centred around Constanța and resorts such as Mamaia, with sandy beaches and summer seaside facilities. It is most appealing in the warmer months and works well as part of a wider trip that also includes the country’s cities or countryside.

Romanian culture is shaped by Latin, Balkan, Hungarian, Saxon and Ottoman influences. Food is hearty and comforting, with dishes such as sarmale, grilled meats, soups, polenta and papanasi doughnuts widely found. In rural areas, especially in Maramureș and Bucovina, visitors can still see wooden churches, painted monasteries and traditional crafts.

Romania is a good fit for touring holidays, city breaks, nature escapes and cultural trips. Distances can be longer than they look on a map, so it is worth allowing time to travel between regions and enjoy the country at a relaxed pace.
