Bucharest is one of Eastern Europe’s most rewarding city breaks, mixing grand architecture, layered history and a lively café culture with a distinctly local character. Romania’s capital is a city of contrasts: wide boulevards and Belle Époque buildings sit alongside communist-era landmarks, Orthodox churches, leafy parks and creative neighbourhoods filled with independent bars, galleries and restaurants.
A good place to begin is the Old Town, known as Lipscani. Its cobbled streets are home to historic inns, churches, cafés and restaurants, making it a popular area for sightseeing by day and dining in the evening. Nearby, the National Museum of Romanian History and the beautiful Stavropoleos Monastery offer a compact introduction to the city’s past and architecture. One of Bucharest’s most striking sights is the Palace of Parliament, a vast building from the Ceaușescu era that can be visited on guided tours. It is an essential stop for understanding the scale and complexity of Romania’s 20th-century history.
Bucharest also has plenty of green space. Herăstrău Park, now officially King Michael I Park, surrounds a large lake and is ideal for a relaxed walk. Within the park, the Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum displays traditional houses and rural buildings from across Romania, giving visitors a useful wider view of the country beyond the capital. Cișmigiu Gardens, closer to the centre, is another pleasant spot for a break between museums and sightseeing.
For culture, the Romanian Athenaeum is one of the city’s most elegant buildings and a key venue for classical music. Art lovers can visit the National Museum of Art of Romania, housed in the former Royal Palace, while those interested in more recent history may want to explore Revolution Square and the surrounding streets.
Food is a highlight of a Bucharest holiday. Traditional Romanian dishes such as sarmale, mici and hearty soups are widely available, but the city also has modern restaurants, bakeries, wine bars and speciality coffee shops. Shopping ranges from high-street malls to antique shops, bookshops and local design stores, especially around central neighbourhoods. With walkable areas, affordable dining compared with many Western European capitals, and plenty of history to uncover, Bucharest suits travellers looking for a cultural city break with a strong sense of place.
