Costa Almeria is one of southern Spain’s more distinctive coastal regions, stretching along the Mediterranean in the province of Almeria, between the busier Costas of Andalusia and the quieter landscapes of eastern Spain. It suits holidaymakers who want sunshine, sea views and relaxed resorts, but also appreciate dramatic scenery and easy day trips beyond the beach.
The coastline is varied. Roquetas de Mar is one of the best-known resorts, with a long seafront, wide beaches, a marina area and plenty of cafés and restaurants. Nearby Aguadulce has a more compact resort feel, with a promenade, harbour and easy access to Almeria city. Further east, Mojacar is especially popular, combining beach areas with the whitewashed hilltop village of Mojacar Pueblo, where narrow streets and viewpoints give it real character. Vera is known for its spacious coastline and holiday developments, while Almerimar offers a marina, golf and a quieter purpose-built resort atmosphere.
One of Costa Almeria’s biggest highlights is Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park. This protected area is known for volcanic landscapes, rugged cliffs, salt flats, small fishing villages and some of the region’s most striking beaches and coves. Places such as San Jose, Las Negras and Agua Amarga are good bases for exploring this wilder side of the coast, with opportunities for walking, boat trips, snorkelling and scenic drives.
Away from the sea, the region has a dry, almost desert-like interior that feels very different from much of Andalusia. The Tabernas Desert is famous for its film locations and unusual landscapes, while Almeria city is worth visiting for the impressive Alcazaba fortress, cathedral, markets and traditional tapas bars.
Food in Costa Almeria is typically relaxed and good value, with seafood, grilled fish, rice dishes, local vegetables and Andalusian tapas widely available. Even in the larger resorts, the atmosphere is generally more laid-back than in some of Spain’s busiest holiday areas.
Costa Almeria is a good choice for a varied Spanish holiday: beach days, coastal villages, natural parks, historic sights and a slower pace, all with a reliably sunny Mediterranean setting.
