Almeria is a relaxed coastal base on Spain’s Costa Almeria, combining Mediterranean beaches with a historic old town and an easy-going Andalusian atmosphere. It suits holidaymakers who like a mix of beach time, sightseeing and good food without the busier feel of Spain’s larger resorts.

The seafront is one of the main draws. Playa de San Miguel and El Zapillo sit close to the centre, with a long promenade for walks, cafés and casual places to eat. Away from the beach, Almeria has plenty of character. The Alcazaba, a large Moorish fortress overlooking the city, is the standout sight and gives excellent views across the rooftops and harbour. The fortified Cathedral of Almeria is also worth visiting, while the old town’s narrow streets, small squares and traditional tapas bars make it a pleasant place to wander in the afternoon or evening.

Food is a real highlight. Almeria is known for its tapas culture, and you will find everything from simple local bars to seafood restaurants near the waterfront. Expect grilled fish, rice dishes, Iberian meats and plenty of fresh produce from the surrounding region. Evenings are generally sociable rather than hectic, with locals and visitors gathering in tapas bars, terraces and relaxed late-night venues.

Almeria also works well for exploring beyond the resort. The Tabernas Desert, famous for its striking landscapes and film history, is an unusual inland excursion, while coastal villages and natural beaches along Costa Almeria offer a quieter alternative to more developed Spanish costas. With its mix of history, sea views and laid-back dining, Almeria is a good choice for a holiday that feels authentic, manageable and varied.
