Costa Brava Holidays

The Costa Brava is one of Spain’s most varied Mediterranean holiday regions, stretching along the coast of north-eastern Catalonia from Blanes towards the French border. Its name means “rugged coast”, and that is a good clue to what sets it apart: rocky headlands, pine-backed coves, clear water, fishing villages and lively resorts all sit within a relatively compact stretch of coastline.

For classic beach holidays, resorts such as Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, Santa Susanna, Malgrat de Mar and Blanes are popular choices, with a good range of hotels, restaurants and easy access to the sea. Lloret de Mar is one of the livelier options, while Tossa de Mar has a more historic feel thanks to its walled old town overlooking the bay. Blanes is often seen as the southern gateway to the Costa Brava and has a working-town feel alongside its seafront and gardens.

Further north, the coastline becomes especially scenic around places such as Begur, Calella de Palafrugell, Llafranc and Tamariu, where small coves, whitewashed buildings and coastal walking paths create a more relaxed atmosphere. Cadaqués, close to Cap de Creus Natural Park, is one of the region’s most distinctive towns, known for its bright houses, artistic links and dramatic surrounding landscape.

There is plenty to do beyond the beach. Coastal paths, known as camins de ronda, link many bays and viewpoints, making walking one of the best ways to enjoy the scenery. Boat trips, snorkelling, kayaking and diving are widely available in suitable coastal areas, especially where the shoreline is rocky and sheltered. Inland, medieval towns such as Pals and Peratallada offer stone streets, local restaurants and a slower pace, while Girona is an excellent day trip for its cathedral, old quarter and riverside houses.

Food is a real highlight, with Catalan cooking, seafood, rice dishes, grilled meats, tapas-style plates and local wines all easy to find. Whether you want a simple resort break, a scenic coastal escape or a holiday combining beaches, culture and countryside, the Costa Brava offers a practical and characterful choice for UK travellers.
