About Calella holidays

Calella is a well-established seaside resort on the Catalan coast, popular with UK holidaymakers who want a straightforward beach break with easy access to Barcelona and other coastal towns. It has a lively, practical feel rather than a small-village atmosphere, with a good choice of hotels, cafés, shops and restaurants spread between the seafront and the older streets inland.

The main draw is Calella’s long sandy beach, which runs for over two kilometres and gives the resort plenty of space even in the busier summer months. The central sections are the most convenient for bars, restaurants and facilities, while the area towards the lighthouse feels a little quieter and more scenic. The seafront promenade is good for a gentle walk, and the landmark Calella lighthouse is one of the resort’s best-known sights, with views along the coast.

Away from the beach, Calella’s old town is centred around streets such as Carrer de l’Església, where you’ll find shops, bakeries, tapas bars and places for a relaxed evening meal. Restaurants range from casual Spanish and Catalan cooking to international options aimed at holiday visitors, so it is easy to keep things simple or try local dishes such as seafood, grilled meats and rice dishes.

Calella has a sociable evening scene, especially in summer, with bars, terrace cafés and some late-night venues. It is lively enough for drinks after dinner, but it is not as intense as the biggest party resorts on this stretch of coast. During the day, popular things to do include walking up to the lighthouse, visiting Dalmau Park for shade and greenery, cycling or strolling along the promenade, and taking boat or train trips to nearby resorts.

One of Calella’s biggest advantages is its railway station, with direct services along the coast towards Barcelona. This makes it a good choice if you want a beach-based holiday but also plan to spend a day exploring the city’s sights. Overall, Calella suits travellers looking for sun, sand, restaurants and easy transport links in a busy but manageable Catalan resort.
