About Antequera holidays

Antequera is an inland Andalusian town in Málaga province, set among olive groves and limestone hills rather than on the coast. It suits holidaymakers who want history, good food and a quieter base within reach of the Costa del Sol, without staying in a beach resort. The atmosphere is traditional and relaxed, with whitewashed streets, church towers, small squares and a strong local feel.

The town is best known for its impressive heritage. The Alcazaba, a Moorish fortress above the centre, offers wide views across the rooftops and surrounding countryside. Nearby, the Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor is one of Antequera’s standout monuments, while the old town has plenty of churches, convents and handsome buildings to discover on foot. Antequera’s prehistoric dolmens are a major highlight too. These ancient burial chambers form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are one of the area’s most important cultural attractions.

Nature is another big reason to visit. El Torcal de Antequera, just outside town, is famous for its dramatic limestone formations, walking routes and far-reaching views. It is a great choice for a half-day outdoors, especially for travellers who enjoy scenic walks, photography and unusual landscapes.

Eating out in Antequera is centred on local Andalusian cooking rather than international resort dining. Tapas bars, traditional restaurants and cafés serve regional dishes such as porra antequerana, hearty stews, grilled meats and the local mollete bread. Evenings are generally low-key, with terraces, wine bars and relaxed places for a drink rather than late-night clubbing.

Antequera does not have beaches, but the coast can be reached by car for a day trip if you want time by the sea. Málaga city, the Costa del Sol resorts and other inland towns are also accessible, making Antequera a practical touring base. For UK travellers looking beyond the busier coastal resorts, it offers a rewarding mix of culture, countryside and authentic Andalusian everyday life.
