Costa Del Sol Holidays

The Costa del Sol is one of Spain’s best-known holiday regions, stretching along the Mediterranean coast of Andalucía in southern Spain. It is popular with UK holidaymakers for its reliable sunshine, easy access through Málaga Airport, long beachfront promenades and wide choice of resorts, from lively seaside towns to quieter coastal bases.

Málaga is the region’s main city and a good choice if you want culture as well as the coast. Its historic centre has the Alcazaba, cathedral, tapas bars and museums including the Picasso Museum. West of Málaga, Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola offer sandy beaches, seafront restaurants, marina areas and plenty of hotels and apartments close to the sea. Further along the coast, Marbella is known for its old town, smart dining and nearby Puerto Banús, while Estepona has a more relaxed feel with a pretty flower-filled centre and a long promenade.

Beaches are a major part of a Costa del Sol holiday. Many resorts have well-served urban beaches with sunbeds, beach bars and calm areas for swimming, while places around Nerja, to the east of Málaga, offer attractive coves and dramatic coastal scenery. Local beach restaurants, known as chiringuitos, are a good place to try grilled sardines, seafood and simple Andalusian dishes.

There is also plenty to see away from the sand. Mijas Pueblo gives a taste of the region’s whitewashed villages, with hillside views over the coast. Ronda, set above a deep gorge, is one of Andalucía’s most memorable inland day trips. Active travellers can look for coastal walks, boat trips, golf courses, watersports and hiking routes in the surrounding hills, depending on the resort and season.

The Costa del Sol suits a wide range of holidays, from easy fly-and-flop beach breaks to trips combining seaside days with culture, food and day excursions. Choosing the right resort is the key: Málaga for city sights, Benalmádena or Fuengirola for convenience and facilities, Marbella for a more polished atmosphere, Estepona for a slower pace, and Nerja for scenery and a smaller-resort feel.
