Estepona is one of the Costa del Sol’s most appealing resorts, offering a relaxed seaside holiday with a more traditional Andalusian feel than some of its busier neighbours. Set west of Marbella, it combines long sandy beaches, a smart seafront promenade and a beautifully kept old town filled with whitewashed streets, flowerpots and small squares.

The main beach, Playa de la Rada, runs close to the centre and is ideal if you want shops, cafés and restaurants within easy reach. To the west of town, Playa del Cristo is a sheltered cove with shallow water, making it a popular choice for a calmer swim. Along the coast you’ll find beach bars and seafood restaurants serving grilled fish, paella and Mediterranean dishes, while the old town is good for tapas, relaxed dinners and pavement cafés.

Estepona’s atmosphere is easy-going rather than loud. Evenings often centre on the old town, the marina and the promenade, where you can enjoy drinks, dinner or a stroll by the sea. There is nightlife, particularly around the marina, but it is generally lower-key than in Marbella or Puerto Banús.

There is plenty to do beyond the beach. The old town is worth exploring slowly, with pretty plazas, independent shops and the Ruta de Murales, a collection of large outdoor murals around the resort. The Orchidarium is a distinctive local attraction, especially if you enjoy gardens and unusual plants. Families may also consider Selwo Aventura, a wildlife park just outside Estepona. For a change of scenery, the Sierra Bermeja mountains rise behind the resort and offer walking routes and viewpoints, while Marbella, Puerto Banús, Ronda and Gibraltar are all possible day trips depending on how far you want to travel.

Estepona suits couples, families and anyone looking for a Costa del Sol holiday with beaches, good food and a pleasant Spanish town atmosphere. It is well suited to travellers who want a resort with plenty of amenities but without feeling overwhelmingly busy.
