Mijas is one of the Costa del Sol’s most characterful holiday spots, offering a mix of traditional Andalusian charm and easy access to the coast. The municipality stretches from the whitewashed hillside village of Mijas Pueblo down to the seafront areas of Mijas Costa, including La Cala de Mijas, so holidays here can feel very different depending on where you stay.
Mijas Pueblo is the postcard view many visitors come for: narrow lanes, flower-filled balconies, small squares and wide views towards the Mediterranean. It is a good choice if you enjoy a relaxed base with cafés, tapas bars, craft shops and scenic walks rather than a full-on beach resort atmosphere. The village is compact but hilly, with viewpoints, chapels and traditional architecture giving it plenty of appeal for a slow wander.
For beach time, La Cala de Mijas is the most popular coastal base. It has a broad sandy beach, a seafront promenade and a friendly, low-key holiday feel. The coastal boardwalk is one of the area’s highlights, making it easy to enjoy a gentle walk beside the sea, stop for lunch, or continue towards neighbouring stretches of coastline. The beaches around Mijas Costa are generally well suited to sunbathing, paddling and relaxed days by the water, with beach bars and restaurants in many of the main areas.
Food is a big part of a Mijas holiday. You will find everything from simple tapas bars and seafood restaurants to international menus aimed at visitors staying along the coast. Evenings are usually laid-back rather than lively, especially in Mijas Pueblo, where dinner on a terrace and a drink in a small bar are more typical than late-night clubbing. La Cala has a livelier feel in summer, but it remains more easy-going than larger Costa del Sol resorts.
Mijas is also well placed for exploring. Fuengirola is nearby for more shops, transport links and a busier seafront, while Marbella, Málaga and inland white villages can all be reached on day trips. Golf is popular in the wider Mijas area too, with several courses close by. Overall, Mijas suits travellers looking for sunshine, scenery and a gentler Costa del Sol atmosphere, with the option of both village charm and beach days.
