Nerja is one of the more characterful resorts on the eastern Costa del Sol, set between the Mediterranean and the foothills of the Sierra de Almijara. It has a traditional Andalusian feel, with whitewashed streets, small squares, sea-view terraces and a relaxed pace that suits couples, families and anyone looking for a quieter base than the larger resorts further west.

The centre of Nerja is easy to explore on foot. Its best-known spot is the Balcón de Europa, a scenic viewpoint on a rocky headland with sweeping views along the coast. Around it you’ll find cafés, ice-cream shops, tapas bars and pedestrian streets leading down towards small coves such as Calahonda and El Salón. Burriana Beach, a little further east, is the resort’s main beach, with a broad stretch of sand and shingle, sunbeds in season, restaurants and water sports. There are also smaller beaches around the town, giving Nerja a more varied coastline than many purpose-built resorts.

Eating out is a big part of a holiday here. Nerja has everything from casual tapas bars and beachfront chiringuitos to Spanish restaurants, seafood spots and international options. The atmosphere in the evening is lively but generally relaxed, with plenty of bars around the old town and Balcón de Europa area. Nightlife is more about drinks, music and late dinners than large clubs, which is part of the resort’s appeal.

One of the main attractions is the Nerja Caves, a short distance from the centre near Maro. These vast caverns are known for their impressive rock formations and are a popular half-day visit. Nearby, the Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs offer some of the area’s most dramatic coastal scenery, with boat trips and kayaking trips available in suitable conditions. Inland, the surrounding hills and villages add another side to the resort, especially for travellers who enjoy scenic drives and viewpoints.

Nerja is around an hour from Málaga Airport by road, making it straightforward for UK holidaymakers. It works well for a beach holiday with local character, good food and plenty to do without feeling too busy or overdeveloped.
