Ronda Holidays

Ronda is one of Andalucía’s most memorable inland towns, set high above the dramatic El Tajo gorge in the mountains of Málaga province. Although often grouped with Costa del Sol holidays, Ronda is not a beach resort. Its appeal is very different: sweeping views, historic streets, traditional restaurants and a slower, more atmospheric style of break.

The town is best known for the Puente Nuevo, the stone bridge that spans the gorge and links the old Moorish quarter with the newer part of Ronda. The views from the bridge and nearby viewpoints are a major highlight, especially in the softer light of early morning or late afternoon. In the old town, narrow lanes lead to whitewashed houses, small squares, churches and remnants of Ronda’s Moorish past, including the well-preserved Arab Baths.

Ronda is a good choice for travellers who enjoy exploring on foot. Much of the pleasure comes from wandering between viewpoints, stopping for coffee in a plaza, and taking in the historic atmosphere. The Plaza de Toros, one of Spain’s oldest bullrings, is another important landmark and has a museum explaining the town’s long association with bullfighting traditions.

Food is a big part of a holiday in Ronda. You will find tapas bars, family-run restaurants and terraces serving Andalusian dishes such as cured meats, cheeses, stews and grilled meats. The surrounding Serranía de Ronda area is also known for its wineries, so local wines often appear on restaurant menus.

Evenings in Ronda are relaxed rather than lively. There are bars and places for dinner, but this is not a destination for late-night clubbing. It suits couples, culture seekers and anyone wanting a scenic base with plenty of character. The countryside around Ronda is ideal for walks, photography and drives through white villages, while the Costa del Sol coast can be reached by car for a change of scene. For a holiday with history, views and authentic Andalusian charm, Ronda offers a rewarding alternative to the coast.
