About Costa Dorada holidays

Costa Dorada, Spain’s “Golden Coast”, runs along the Mediterranean in the province of Tarragona, south of Barcelona. It is best known for its long sandy beaches, warm shallow water and easy-going resort towns, making it a popular choice for UK holidaymakers who want a classic Spanish coastal break with plenty to do nearby.

Salou is the region’s best-known resort, with broad beaches, a lively seafront promenade and a good choice of restaurants, bars and hotels. It is also close to PortAventura World, one of Spain’s biggest theme park resorts, which is a major draw for families and groups. Nearby La Pineda has a more relaxed feel, with a long flat beach and a calmer atmosphere, while Cambrils is often chosen for its harbour, seafood restaurants and slightly more traditional character.

The coastline is varied enough to suit different styles of holiday. You’ll find wide, well-equipped beaches such as Llevant in Salou and quieter coves around Cap de Salou, where rocky headlands and pine trees give the coast a more scenic feel. Many beaches are gently shelving, which is one reason the area is so popular for swimming and paddling.

Costa Dorada also has strong cultural appeal. Tarragona is a highlight, with impressive Roman remains including an amphitheatre overlooking the sea, city walls and a historic old town. Reus, a short journey inland, is known for its Modernist architecture and links to Antoni Gaudí. Food is another reason to explore beyond the beach: expect fresh seafood, rice dishes, grilled meats, local olive oil and Catalan specialities, with Cambrils particularly well regarded for dining.

For more active days, visitors can walk coastal paths, cycle around flatter resort areas, visit local markets or take day trips into the surrounding countryside. The region is also well placed for combining beach time with sightseeing, as Barcelona is reachable by train from several Costa Dorada towns. Overall, Costa Dorada offers a balanced holiday mix: reliable seaside resorts, good beaches, family-friendly attractions, historic towns and plenty of places to eat well.
