Salou is one of the Costa Dorada’s best-known holiday resorts, set on Spain’s north-eastern coast in Catalonia. It suits travellers who want an easy seaside break with plenty close at hand: long sandy beaches, a lively centre, a good choice of restaurants and one of Europe’s major theme park resorts nearby.

The main beach, Llevant, runs alongside the palm-lined Passeig Jaume I promenade and is the centre of the resort’s daytime activity. It has soft sand, shallow water and plenty of space, with cafés and bars nearby for a relaxed lunch or drink. Ponent Beach, on the western side of the resort, is another popular stretch of sand and tends to feel a little more laid-back. Smaller spots such as Capellans Beach and the coves around Cap de Salou are good options if you prefer a more sheltered setting, though some involve steps or a short walk.

Away from the beach, Salou has a straightforward holiday feel. The resort centre is busy in summer, with shops, ice cream parlours, casual restaurants and bars within easy walking distance of many hotels and apartments. Dining is varied, from Spanish tapas and seafood to international menus aimed at visitors. Evenings can be as low-key or as lively as you want: families often stay around the promenade and restaurant areas, while the streets around Avinguda Carles Buïgas are known for bars and late-night venues.

One of Salou’s biggest draws is its proximity to PortAventura World, just a short journey from the resort. The complex includes PortAventura Park, Ferrari Land and a water park, making it a major reason many families and groups choose the area. For a gentler day out, you can walk sections of the Camí de Ronda coastal path towards Cap de Salou, take a boat trip along the coast, or visit nearby Tarragona for Roman ruins, a historic old town and a more local Catalan atmosphere.
