About Tunisia holidays

Tunisia is a compact North African destination with a wide mix of holiday experiences, from Mediterranean beach resorts to ancient ruins, desert landscapes and atmospheric old towns. For UK travellers, it offers a shorter flight than many long-haul winter sun options, while still feeling distinctly different in culture, scenery and food.

The best-known holiday areas are along the east coast. Hammamet is popular for its sandy beaches, hotels and relaxed resort feel, with a historic medina and easy access to local cafés and shops. Sousse combines a working city with a beach resort, including a UNESCO-listed medina and nearby Port El Kantaoui, a purpose-built marina area with restaurants and waterside hotels. Monastir is another coastal choice, known for its ribat fortress and seafront setting. Further south, the island of Djerba has a gentler pace, long beaches, whitewashed villages and a distinctive blend of Tunisian, Berber and Mediterranean influences.

Away from the resorts, Tunisia has a rich cultural and historical side. Tunis, the capital, is home to a large medina and the Bardo Museum, while nearby Carthage and Sidi Bou Said are among the country’s most visited sights. Inland, Kairouan is one of the most important historic cities in the Islamic world, and El Jem is famous for its impressive Roman amphitheatre. The south opens up a very different landscape, with desert trips, oasis towns, salt flats and traditional troglodyte dwellings around Matmata.

Food is a highlight of a Tunisia holiday. Expect couscous, grilled fish, brik pastry, spicy harissa, olives, dates and mint tea, with dishes varying between the coast and inland regions. French, Arabic and Berber influences are all part of daily life, and modest dress is appreciated when visiting religious or traditional sites.

Tunisia suits beach holidays, cultural touring, winter sun breaks and trips that combine coast with desert or historic sightseeing. It is a good choice for travellers who want more than a resort stay, but still value easy hotel-based holidays by the sea.

Tunisia Holidays FAQs

Spring and autumn are often the most comfortable times for sightseeing and beach days, with warm weather but less intense heat. Summer is hot and popular on the coast, while winter can be mild, especially in the north, though evenings may feel cool.
