About Izmir holidays

Izmir is one of Turkey’s most rewarding Aegean regions, combining a long, varied coastline with historic sites, relaxed seaside towns and a lively regional capital. It suits holidaymakers who want more than a simple beach break, with easy access to ancient ruins, harbourfront dining, local markets and some of the country’s most attractive coastal resorts.

Izmir city is a good starting point, especially if you enjoy a more local feel than the larger purpose-built resorts. The Kordon waterfront is ideal for a stroll beside the bay, while Konak Square, the Clock Tower and the Kemeraltı Bazaar give a real sense of the city’s everyday character. Restaurants and cafés serve Aegean-style meze, grilled fish, olive oil dishes and regional favourites such as boyoz and kumru.

Along the Cesme Peninsula, the mood becomes more resort-focused. Cesme is known for its marina, beaches, seafood restaurants and historic castle, while nearby Alacati is popular for its stone houses, boutique hotels, windsurfing conditions and stylish places to eat. Ilica is well known for its sandy beach and warm thermal waters, making this part of the region particularly appealing for a coastal holiday with plenty of choice.

Further north, Foca offers a quieter atmosphere, with a pretty harbour, boat trips and a traditional fishing-town feel. To the south, Seferihisar and Sigacik are good options for a slower pace, with a small marina, local markets and easy access to coves and beaches. Ozdere and Gumuldur are more laid-back coastal areas that can work well for a simple sun-and-sea stay.

Izmir also has major cultural appeal. Ephesus, near Selcuk, is one of Turkey’s most important ancient sites and is easily one of the region’s standout day trips. The House of the Virgin Mary, the Basilica of St John and the village of Sirince are also nearby. Inland areas around Urla are increasingly known for vineyards, olive groves and excellent regional food.

With direct seasonal flights from the UK often serving Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport, the region is a practical choice for a varied Turkish holiday that can include beaches, history, food and scenic Aegean landscapes.
