Nessebar Holidays

Nessebar is one of Bulgaria’s most characterful Black Sea resorts, combining a traditional seaside holiday with a remarkably atmospheric historic centre. Set on the Bourgas coast, the resort is best known for its Old Town, a UNESCO-listed settlement on a small rocky peninsula linked to the newer part of town by a narrow causeway. Its cobbled lanes, timber-framed houses, harbour views and ancient churches give it a very different feel from many purpose-built beach resorts.

Beach time is still a big part of holidays in Nessebar. The main sandy beach areas are in the newer part of town, with South Beach a popular choice for swimming, sunbathing and relaxed days by the sea. There are also smaller coastal spots around the Old Town, though these tend to be more limited in space. The water is generally appealing in the warmer months, and the coastline is well placed for boat trips and views across the bay towards nearby Sunny Beach.

The Old Town is the highlight for many visitors. You can wander between medieval churches, Byzantine remains, stone walls and sea-facing viewpoints, stopping at small shops, cafés and restaurants along the way. The Archaeological Museum is useful for understanding Nessebar’s long history, which includes Thracian, Greek, Roman and Byzantine influences. It is an easy place to explore on foot, although the old streets can be uneven in places.

Eating out is one of the pleasures of staying here. Restaurants range from simple taverns to waterfront spots serving grilled fish, seafood, Bulgarian salads, meats and local wines. The atmosphere in the evenings is usually relaxed, especially around the harbour and Old Town lanes. Nessebar has bars and places for a drink after dinner, but it is not as full-on as neighbouring Sunny Beach, which is close enough for those wanting a livelier night out.

Nessebar suits couples, history lovers and holidaymakers who want beach days with plenty to explore nearby. It also works well as a base for visiting other parts of the southern Black Sea coast, while still offering a distinctive setting of its own.
