About Sozopol holidays

Sozopol is one of Bulgaria’s most characterful Black Sea resorts, set on a small peninsula south of Bourgas. It combines a traditional old town with sandy beaches and a relaxed holiday atmosphere, making it a good choice for travellers who want more than a purpose-built resort.

The old town is the heart of Sozopol. Its cobbled lanes, timber-framed houses, sea views and remains of ancient fortress walls give it a very different feel from the larger resorts further up the coast. It is a pleasant place to wander in the evening, with small shops, galleries, churches and plenty of places to stop for a drink or meal. Sozopol also has a long history, and the Archaeological Museum is worth visiting if you want to understand the town’s Greek and Thracian past.

Beach time is a major part of holidays here. Central Beach sits close to the old town and is handy for a quick swim or a relaxed day by the water. Harmani Beach is larger and popular with visitors staying in the newer part of town, with a good choice of cafés and beach bars nearby. Just outside Sozopol, Kavatsi and Smokinya are also well-known sandy beaches, often chosen by holidaymakers looking for a little more space.

Eating out is one of Sozopol’s strengths. You will find seafood restaurants overlooking the water, traditional Bulgarian taverns, casual grills and cafés serving familiar international dishes. The pace is generally laid-back, especially compared with Bulgaria’s livelier party resorts. Evenings are more about seafront meals, cocktails, live music in some bars and relaxed late drinks than large-scale clubbing.

Popular things to do include boat trips along the coast, visiting nearby St Ivan Island on organised excursions, exploring the marina area, or taking a day trip to Bourgas. Nature lovers may also enjoy trips towards the Ropotamo River area, known for its wetlands and coastal scenery. Overall, Sozopol suits couples, friends and families who like beach days, good food and an atmospheric old town in one place.
