Nicosia is Cyprus’s inland capital, offering a very different holiday experience from the island’s coastal resorts. Rather than beaches and seafront promenades, its appeal lies in history, local neighbourhoods, museums, traditional food and a lively café culture. It suits travellers who enjoy exploring on foot, learning about Cypriot culture and using the city as a base for a more independent break.

The historic centre sits within impressive Venetian walls, with narrow streets, restored townhouses, small churches, shops and courtyard cafés. Ledra Street is one of the best-known areas for a wander, with plenty of places to stop for coffee, lunch or an evening meal. The city is also notable as the world’s last divided capital, and visitors can see sections of the Green Line in the old town. It is usually possible to cross to the northern part of the city at designated checkpoints, but travellers should carry their passport and check current entry rules before doing so.

Nicosia is one of the best places in Cyprus for museums and cultural sightseeing. The Cyprus Museum is a key stop for archaeology, while the Leventis Municipal Museum gives useful context on the city’s past. Famagusta Gate, the old city walls and the restored streets around Laiki Geitonia are also worth including in a relaxed day of sightseeing.

Eating out is a highlight. You’ll find traditional tavernas serving meze, grilled meats, halloumi and seasonal Cypriot dishes, alongside modern restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops. Evenings are generally more local and low-key than in Cyprus’s beach resorts, with wine bars, casual bars and restaurants rather than a big holiday nightlife scene.

As Nicosia is inland, it is not the right choice if you want a beach on your doorstep. However, it works well for travellers who want an authentic city atmosphere, cultural attractions and easy access by road to other parts of Cyprus, including Larnaca and the Troodos foothills.
