Aghia Marina is a relaxed beach resort on the north-west coast of Crete, just west of Chania and close to the neighbouring resorts of Stalos and Platanias. It suits UK holidaymakers who want an easy coastal base with plenty of places to eat and drink, while still being within straightforward reach of Chania’s Venetian harbour and the wider Chania region.

The main draw is Aghia Marina Beach, a long sandy stretch with organised sections offering sunbeds, umbrellas and beach bars, as well as quieter areas where you can simply lay down a towel. The sea is generally inviting in the summer months, with shallow sections that make it popular with couples and families alike, although conditions can vary when the wind picks up. Just offshore, you can see the small islet of Agioi Theodoroi, a protected nature reserve that adds a distinctive backdrop to the bay.

The resort itself is spread mainly along the coast road, with hotels, apartments, mini-markets, cafés, bakeries, bars and tavernas all within easy reach. Dining is a big part of a stay here, from casual gyros and souvlaki spots to traditional Cretan tavernas serving grilled meats, fresh fish, local cheeses, salads and meze. Evenings in Aghia Marina are lively without feeling overwhelming. You will find cocktail bars, music bars and beachfront venues, but the atmosphere is generally more holiday-resort relaxed than club-focused. For a busier night out, nearby Platanias has a wider choice of late bars and clubs.

Aghia Marina also works well as a base for exploring western Crete. Chania Old Town is an easy trip for its harbour, narrow lanes, museums, shops and restaurants. Popular excursions from the area include the Samaria Gorge, the beaches of Balos and Elafonisi, and drives into the White Mountains and traditional inland villages. For many visitors, Aghia Marina offers a practical mix of beach time, relaxed evenings and access to some of Crete’s best-known sights.
