Chania is one of Crete’s most scenic holiday regions, combining Venetian harbours, mountain villages, long sandy beaches and some of the island’s best-known natural sights. Set on the western side of Crete, it suits travellers who want more than a simple fly-and-flop break, with plenty of choice between lively resort areas, quieter coastal stays and day trips into dramatic countryside.
Chania Town is the region’s atmospheric centre. Its old harbour, lighthouse, narrow lanes and waterfront restaurants make it a favourite for evening strolls and relaxed meals. The old town reflects the area’s Venetian and Ottoman past, with boutique shops, museums, covered markets and small tavernas tucked into characterful side streets. It is a good base if you want history, dining and access to local buses or excursions.
Along the coast west of Chania Town, resorts such as Agia Marina, Platanias and Stalos are popular with UK holidaymakers thanks to their sandy beaches, seafront tavernas and easy access to the city. Platanias has the liveliest feel, while Stalos and Agia Marina are slightly more relaxed but still well placed for restaurants and beach days. Further west, Kissamos offers a more low-key base for exploring the wilder Gramvousa peninsula and boat trips towards Balos Lagoon.
The beaches are a major part of Chania’s appeal. Elafonissi, with its shallow turquoise water and pale pink-tinged sand in places, is one of Crete’s most photographed beaches. Balos Lagoon is another standout, known for its striking colours and remote setting. Falassarna is a broad sandy beach with big sunsets and a more open, natural feel. These spots can be busy in peak season, so early starts are worthwhile.
Away from the coast, the White Mountains shape the region’s landscape. The Samaria Gorge is the most famous walking route, though it is a demanding full-day hike and best suited to fit walkers. There are also gentler village drives, olive groves, monasteries and traditional mountain tavernas where you can try Cretan dishes such as dakos, local cheeses, lamb, seafood and seasonal vegetables.
Holidays to Chania can be as relaxed or active as you choose, with a strong mix of beaches, history, food and scenery all within reach.
