About Chania holidays

Chania is one of Crete’s most atmospheric holiday bases, set on the island’s north-west coast with a beautiful Venetian harbour, a maze-like old town and easy access to some of western Crete’s best-known beaches and day trips. It suits travellers who want more than a simple fly-and-flop resort, combining seaside relaxation with history, good food and a lively but not overwhelming evening scene.

The old harbour is the centrepiece, with waterfront restaurants, colourful buildings and views towards the Venetian lighthouse. Behind it, narrow lanes lead through the old town, where you’ll find small shops, courtyard cafés, boutique hotels and traces of Venetian and Ottoman architecture. Splantzia and the harbour backstreets are particularly good for wandering, especially in the evening when the town feels busy but relaxed.

Chania is a strong choice for eating out. You’ll find traditional Cretan tavernas serving dishes such as dakos, lamb, local cheeses, seafood and plenty of seasonal vegetables, alongside more contemporary restaurants and café-bars. The harbour is scenic, while the side streets often feel a little quieter and more local.

For beach time, Nea Chora is the closest sandy beach to the centre and can be reached on foot from the old town. A short bus or taxi ride brings you to beaches such as Golden Beach and Agioi Apostoloi, which are popular for swimming and a more classic resort-style day by the sea. Chania is also a convenient base for organised trips or self-drive days to places such as Falassarna, Balos Lagoon and Elafonissi, though these are outside the resort and involve longer journeys.

Popular things to do in Chania include visiting the Maritime Museum of Crete, exploring the Archaeological Museum in Halepa, taking a boat trip from the harbour, or joining excursions into the White Mountains and Samaria Gorge. Nightlife is mostly centred on relaxed bars, cocktail spots and late dinners rather than large clubbing venues, making Chania well suited to couples, friends and independent travellers who enjoy atmosphere, culture and coastal scenery.
