Georgioupolis is a relaxed seaside resort on Crete’s north coast, set between Chania and Rethymno with the White Mountains in the distance. Once a small fishing village, it has grown into a friendly holiday base without losing its easy-going Cretan feel. The centre is compact and pleasant, with a leafy village square, cafés, tavernas and a small harbour where fishing boats still add to the atmosphere.

The resort is best known for its beaches. The main beach stretches east from the village for several kilometres, offering soft sand, shallow water in many places and plenty of space for sunbathing and swimming. Closer to the harbour, Kalivaki Beach sits in a more sheltered spot near the river mouth and can be a good choice when the main beach is breezier. As with much of Crete’s north coast, sea conditions can vary, so it is always worth paying attention to local flags and advice.

Eating out is a big part of a holiday in Georgioupolis. Around the square, harbour and seafront you will find traditional tavernas serving Cretan favourites such as grilled meats, fresh fish, salads, local cheeses and meze-style dishes. The pace is informal, making it well suited to long lunches, relaxed evening meals and people-watching with a drink in the square.

Nightlife in Georgioupolis is low-key rather than lively. There are bars and café-bars for cocktails, beer or a late coffee, but the resort is not aimed at clubbing. This makes it a good choice for couples, families and travellers who want evenings with atmosphere rather than noise.

There are several easy things to do nearby. The small white chapel of Agios Nikolaos, reached along a stone walkway by the harbour, is one of the resort’s most recognisable sights. Lake Kournas, Crete’s only natural freshwater lake, is a short trip inland and is popular for walks, pedalo rides and views of the surrounding hills. Georgioupolis is also well placed for exploring Chania’s Venetian harbour, Rethymno’s old town and the traditional villages of the Apokoronas area.
