Kolymbari Holidays

Kolymbari is a relaxed coastal resort on the north-west coast of Crete, around half an hour’s drive from Chania. Set where the Rodopou Peninsula meets the sea, it has the feel of a working Cretan village as much as a holiday resort, with a small harbour, waterfront tavernas and a calm, unhurried pace.

The beach at Kolymbari is long and mostly pebbly, with clear water and views across the bay. It is well suited to swimming, sunbathing and quiet days by the sea, though beach shoes can be useful because of the shingle and stones. The seafront is not heavily built up, so the resort suits travellers who prefer space and simplicity over a busy promenade.

Food is one of Kolymbari’s main pleasures. Around the harbour and along the seafront you will find traditional tavernas serving fresh fish, grilled meats, salads, local olive oil and Cretan specialities. Evenings tend to be low-key, with meals by the water and a few relaxed bars rather than lively clubs. For a wider choice of nightlife, shopping and sightseeing, Chania is within easy reach by car, taxi or local bus.

There are several worthwhile things to do nearby. The Monastery of Gonia, set just above the village, is one of the area’s best-known sights and has lovely views over the coast. Kolymbari is also a convenient base for exploring western Crete, including the beaches and coves around the Rodopou Peninsula, traditional inland villages and scenic drives through olive groves. Popular day trips include Chania’s Venetian harbour, Falassarna beach and, with more planning, boat trips towards Balos Lagoon from the wider Kissamos area.

Kolymbari is best for couples, independent travellers and anyone looking for a quieter Cretan holiday with good food, sea views and easy access to Chania. It is not the place for a full-on party break, but it offers a comfortable base for a laid-back stay on Crete’s north-west coast.
