Maleme Holidays

Maleme is a relaxed coastal resort on the north-west coast of Crete, around 16 kilometres west of Chania. It suits holidaymakers who want a quieter base with easy access to the busier resorts of Platanias and Agia Marina, as well as Chania’s Venetian harbour, without staying in the middle of the crowds.

The resort has a low-key, village-like feel, with accommodation spread around the main road and seafront. Maleme Beach is long and generally uncrowded, with a mix of pebbles, shingle and patches of sand. The water is usually clear, and there are organised sections with sunbeds and umbrellas, alongside quieter stretches where you can settle in with your own towel. Sea shoes can be useful, especially where the shoreline is stonier.

Eating out in Maleme is straightforward and informal. You’ll find traditional tavernas, grill houses and café-bars serving Cretan dishes such as dakos, lamb, fresh salads, local cheeses and seafood where available. Evenings tend to be calm rather than lively, with drinks by the sea or a relaxed meal being the main focus. For a wider choice of bars and later nights, Platanias is only a short taxi or bus ride away.

Maleme is also a good spot for travellers interested in Crete’s Second World War history. The German War Cemetery, set on a hill above the resort, is one of the area’s most significant sites and offers views over the coast. The nearby former airfield played an important role during the Battle of Crete.

For days out, Chania is one of the easiest and most rewarding trips, with its harbour, narrow old-town streets and museums. With a hire car, you can explore western Crete’s beaches and countryside, including Falassarna, Kissamos and the routes towards Balos Lagoon. Organised excursions also run to well-known sights such as the Samaria Gorge and Elafonissi, though journey times can be long.

Overall, Maleme is best for a peaceful Crete holiday with a beach, local tavernas and good access to the wider Chania region.
