Platanias Holidays

Platanias is one of the best-known resorts on Crete’s north-west coast, set around 11 kilometres west of Chania. It suits holidaymakers who want a beach-based stay with plenty of places to eat, drink and explore nearby, while still being within easy reach of Chania’s Venetian harbour and old town.

The resort is spread between the seafront and the older hillside village of Ano Platanias. Along the coast, the beach is the main focus: a long stretch of mostly sand and shingle with sunbeds, beach bars and water sports available in season. The sea can be calm and inviting, though conditions vary, so it is worth checking local flags before swimming. From parts of the beach you can look out towards Agioi Theodoroi, the small protected islets offshore.

Platanias has a lively, holiday atmosphere, especially in summer. The main road is lined with tavernas, cafés, cocktail bars, shops and tour offices, making it easy to arrange meals, excursions and practical holiday essentials. Dining ranges from casual gyros and pizza to Cretan tavernas serving local dishes such as dakos, lamb, fresh seafood and meze. The nightlife is among the livelier options in the Chania area, with late-opening bars and music venues, though it is still more relaxed than major clubbing resorts elsewhere in Greece.

For a change of pace, walk up to Ano Platanias for sea views, traditional lanes and quieter tavernas. The hillside is also home to the Platanias War Shelter, a small Second World War site set in tunnels beneath the village, which offers a different perspective on the area’s history.

Platanias is a practical base for seeing western Crete. Regular buses and taxis connect the resort with Chania, while popular day trips include the old harbour, Samaria Gorge, Lake Kournas, Balos lagoon and Elafonissi beach. With its long beach, good choice of restaurants and easy access to Chania, Platanias works well for travellers who like a resort with energy but do not want to be far from culture, scenery and day-trip options.
