Aghios Nikolaos is a relaxed seaside resort on Crete’s north-east coast, set around the sheltered waters of Mirabello Bay. It has a more grown-up, scenic feel than some of Crete’s busier resorts, with a working harbour, a marina, waterfront cafés and a compact centre that is easy to explore on foot. Holidays here suit travellers who want beaches, good places to eat, gentle evenings out and a convenient base for seeing eastern Crete.

The resort’s best-known landmark is Lake Voulismeni, a small lake linked to the harbour by a narrow channel. The cafés and restaurants around the water are a popular spot for lunch, coffee or an evening meal, especially as the town lights begin to reflect on the lake. The surrounding streets have a mix of boutiques, souvenir shops, bakeries and tavernas, so it is a pleasant place to wander without needing a strict itinerary.

Beach days are easy in and around Aghios Nikolaos. Ammos Beach sits close to the centre and is handy if you want a quick swim between sightseeing and lunch. Kitroplateia Beach is also central, with places to eat nearby, while Ammoudi Beach is a little further around the coast. Almyros Beach, just south of town, is popular for its shallow water and more spacious feel. As with much of Crete, the coastline varies from sandy stretches to smaller pebbly coves, so beach shoes can be useful.

Food is a real part of the appeal. Expect plenty of Cretan dishes such as grilled fish, dakos, local cheeses, slow-cooked meats and seasonal vegetables, alongside familiar Greek favourites. Evenings are generally laid-back rather than club-focused, with cocktail bars, wine bars and waterfront terraces providing most of the nightlife.

Popular things to do include boat trips around Mirabello Bay, excursions towards Spinalonga, visits to nearby Elounda, and day trips into the Lasithi Plateau or traditional mountain villages. Aghios Nikolaos also works well for travellers hiring a car, as it offers a comfortable resort base with access to beaches, viewpoints and quieter parts of eastern Crete.
