About Crete Heraklion holidays

Crete Heraklion is one of the island’s most varied holiday regions, combining lively north-coast resorts, long sandy beaches, ancient sites and traditional inland villages. It is centred on Heraklion, Crete’s capital, where ferries, flights, museums, shops and harbourfront cafés make it a practical base as well as a place to explore in its own right.

For classic beach holidays, many visitors head east of Heraklion along the north coast. Hersonissos is one of the best-known resorts, with a busy seafront, plenty of restaurants and easy access to boat trips and coastal walks. Nearby Stalis offers a more relaxed feel with a broad sandy beach and a good choice of tavernas, while Malia is known for its long beach and energetic resort atmosphere. Gouves and Kokkini Hani are convenient choices for a straightforward seaside break close to the airport, and Agia Pelagia, west of Heraklion, has a sheltered bay backed by hills.

The region is especially strong for history and culture. The Palace of Knossos, just outside Heraklion, is Crete’s most famous Minoan site, and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum helps put its frescoes, pottery and myths into context. In the city itself, Venetian walls, the old harbour and Koules Fortress reflect Crete’s long and layered past. Further south, the archaeological sites of Phaistos and Gortyna offer a quieter look at ancient Crete.

Away from the coast, the landscape becomes more rural, with olive groves, vineyards and villages set beneath rugged hills. The area around Archanes is known for wine and traditional food, while the inland routes towards Zaros and the foothills of Mount Psiloritis are good for scenic drives, walking and a slower pace. On the south coast, Matala has a distinctive setting with cliffs, caves and a broad bay, making it a popular day trip or alternative base.

Food is a major part of a holiday here, from simple seaside tavernas serving grilled fish and Cretan salads to village restaurants offering local cheeses, lamb, olive oil and seasonal vegetables. Crete Heraklion suits travellers who want beach time, culture and easy access in one holiday, with plenty of choice between lively resorts and quieter corners.

Crete Heraklion Holidays FAQs

It depends on the style of holiday you want. Hersonissos and Malia suit visitors looking for busy resorts, Stalis is good for a more relaxed beach break, Gouves and Kokkini Hani are convenient for the airport, and Agia Pelagia has a smaller bay setting. Heraklion city is best for history, museums, shopping and transport links.
