About Bali holidays

Bali is a small seaside resort on the north coast of Crete, set around a series of sheltered bays between Heraklion and Rethymno. It is a good choice for holidaymakers who want a relaxed beach break with tavernas, sea views and easy access to some of Crete’s better-known sights, without staying in one of the island’s larger resorts.

The resort is spread along a hilly coastline, so different parts of Bali have their own feel. The main beaches sit in coves protected from the open sea, which often makes the water calmer than on more exposed stretches of Crete’s north coast. Livadi is one of the larger beaches, while Varkotopos and the harbour area are popular for swimming, sunbathing and waterfront meals. There are usually sunbeds and umbrellas in season, along with cafés and places to pick up drinks and snacks close by.

Bali’s atmosphere is friendly and fairly low-key. Evenings tend to revolve around the tavernas and restaurants, many of which serve Cretan dishes, grilled fish, Greek salads and simple international options. You will find bars for a relaxed drink, but this is not a resort known for a big clubbing scene. It suits couples, families and anyone looking for a slower pace.

For things to do, boat trips from the harbour are a popular way to see the coastline, and the clear water makes swimming and snorkelling enjoyable in the sheltered bays. Hiring a car is useful if you want to explore further, with Rethymno’s Venetian harbour, Heraklion, the Palace of Knossos and traditional inland villages all possible as day trips. The surrounding hills and coastal viewpoints also add to the appeal, although the slopes mean some accommodation involves uphill walks.

Bali offers a compact, scenic base for a Crete holiday, with beaches, tavernas and a village-style setting rather than a large-resort feel. It is especially well suited to travellers who want somewhere easy-going, pretty and practical for exploring the north of the island.
