Elounda Holidays

Elounda is a relaxed coastal resort on Crete’s north-eastern coast, set around the sheltered waters of Mirabello Bay. It has a more refined, easy-going feel than many larger Cretan resorts, with a pretty harbour, waterfront cafés and tavernas, and views across to the Spinalonga peninsula and the small island of Spinalonga beyond. Holidays here suit travellers who want a scenic base with good restaurants, calm swimming spots and plenty of gentle exploring rather than a busy party scene.

The resort centre is compact and pleasant to wander, with fishing boats in the harbour, small shops, cafés and places to eat overlooking the water. Restaurants tend to focus on Greek and Cretan dishes, including fresh fish, grilled meats, salads, meze and local specialities. Evenings are generally low-key, with drinks by the harbour or a relaxed meal rather than late-night clubs.

Elounda has several small beaches and bathing areas, including a main town beach with shallow, sheltered water that is handy for a simple beach day. The coastline here is a mix of sand, shingle and rocky swimming spots, so beach shoes can be useful in places. The sea is often calm thanks to the protected bay, making it appealing for swimming and snorkelling.

One of the most popular trips from Elounda is to Spinalonga, the former leper colony and Venetian fortress island. Boats also run from nearby Plaka, and the journey is short, making it an easy half-day outing. Close to town, you can walk or drive over the causeway towards the Spinalonga peninsula, where the old salt pans, coastal views and remains associated with ancient Olous add interest to a leisurely stroll.

For a change of scene, Agios Nikolaos is a short drive away and offers a livelier harbour town atmosphere, shops and lakeside cafés. Plaka, just north of Elounda, is smaller and quieter, with seafront tavernas and views towards Spinalonga. Overall, Elounda is a good choice for a peaceful Cretan holiday with attractive scenery, good food and easy access to some of eastern Crete’s best-known coastal sights.
