About Heraklion holidays

Heraklion is Crete’s lively capital and a practical, culture-rich base for holidays on the island’s north coast. It has a more urban feel than a purpose-built beach resort, with a busy harbour, shopping streets, historic squares and plenty of places to eat and drink. For UK holidaymakers who want a mix of sightseeing, Cretan food and easy access to nearby beaches, it is a very convenient choice.

The old town is the best place to start. Around the Venetian harbour you’ll find the sturdy Koules Fortress, sea views and waterfront cafés, while the surrounding streets lead to churches, fountains, markets and small shops. Heraklion Archaeological Museum is one of the city’s standout attractions, especially if you are interested in the Minoan civilisation. The Palace of Knossos, just outside the city, is the major ancient site in the area and is easy to visit by local transport, taxi or organised excursion.

Although Heraklion itself is not a classic beach resort, there are beaches close by. Ammoudara, to the west, is one of the easiest options, with a long sandy stretch, sunbeds in places and a choice of cafés and tavernas. To the east, beaches around Karteros and Amnissos are also popular for a straightforward day by the sea. Having a car or using local buses makes it easier to combine beach time with sightseeing.

Food is a big part of a Heraklion holiday. You’ll find traditional tavernas, casual grill houses, seafood restaurants and modern cafés across the centre and along the waterfront. Local dishes such as dakos, cheese pies, slow-cooked lamb, fresh fish and Cretan salads are widely available, often alongside local wine or raki.

Evenings in Heraklion are sociable rather than purely resort-style. There are relaxed bars, cocktail spots and late-opening cafés around the old town, squares and harbour area. For a much bigger clubbing scene, holidaymakers often look to resorts further along the coast, but Heraklion itself works well for laid-back nights out with good food and drinks. Overall, it suits travellers who want authentic city energy, history and easy connections rather than an all-beach holiday.

Heraklion Holidays FAQs

Yes, Heraklion is a good choice if you want culture, restaurants, historic sights and convenient transport links. It is busier and more urban than many Cretan resorts, so it suits travellers who prefer a lively base rather than a quiet beach-only holiday.
