About Hersonissos holidays

Hersonissos is one of Crete’s best-known holiday resorts, set on the north coast of the island around half an hour’s drive east of Heraklion. It suits travellers who want a lively seaside base with plenty close at hand, from beaches and boat trips to restaurants, bars and easy day trips around central Crete.

The resort is spread around a busy waterfront, with a long promenade lined with places to eat and drink. By day, the pace is relaxed, with visitors spending time on the local beaches, wandering the harbour or heading out on excursions. In the evening, Hersonissos becomes much livelier, especially along the seafront and the main bar streets, where you’ll find cocktail bars, music venues and late-night spots. It is a good choice if you like having nightlife within walking distance, though quieter pockets can be found away from the main strip.

Beaches in and around Hersonissos are generally small, organised and easy to reach, with sunbeds, cafés and watersports available in many areas. The central beaches are convenient for a quick swim, while nearby coves and beach clubs offer a more relaxed setting. Families and couples often head to neighbouring areas such as Anissaras or Stalis for broader sandy stretches and a slightly calmer atmosphere.

Food is a big part of a stay here. Alongside familiar international restaurants, you’ll find tavernas serving Cretan dishes such as grilled meats, fresh seafood, dakos, local cheeses and salads with plenty of olive oil. The old villages above the coast, including Old Hersonissos, Koutouloufari and Piskopiano, are especially good for a more traditional meal in a quieter setting.

There is plenty to do beyond the beach. Popular options include boat trips, waterparks, the Cretaquarium near Gouves, and visits to the Minoan Palace of Knossos near Heraklion. Hiring a car or joining an organised tour makes it easier to explore inland villages, olive groves and other parts of Crete. Hersonissos works particularly well for holidaymakers who want a sociable resort with lots of facilities, while still being close to some of the island’s cultural highlights.
