About Ierapetra holidays

Ierapetra is a relaxed seaside resort on the south coast of Crete, facing the Libyan Sea. It has a more local, lived-in feel than many of the island’s busier north-coast resorts, making it a good choice for holidaymakers who want warm weather, sea views, simple beach days and Cretan food without a hectic pace.

The resort is centred around a working waterfront, with a harbour, promenade and a choice of cafés, bars and tavernas. Evenings are generally low-key: think dinner by the sea, a drink overlooking the marina and a wander along the front rather than big club nights. Restaurants serve plenty of Cretan staples, including grilled fish, lamb, salads, local cheeses and olive oil-based dishes, with both traditional tavernas and casual modern spots to choose from.

Ierapetra has beaches close to the centre, including a long town beach where you can swim and sunbathe within easy reach of shops and restaurants. Nearby stretches such as Koutsounari Long Beach offer more space and a quieter feel, with clear water and a mix of pebbles and sand. Beach shoes can be useful in places, as parts of the coastline are shingly.

There is enough to explore if you like a bit of history and scenery alongside beach time. The Venetian fortress of Kales stands by the harbour and is one of the town’s best-known landmarks. The old quarter has narrow lanes and traditional houses, while the waterfront is ideal for an evening stroll. Boat trips to Chrissi Island have long been associated with Ierapetra, although access and landing arrangements can change for environmental reasons, so it is worth checking locally before planning your day around it.

Inland from Ierapetra, the landscape becomes mountainous and rural, with villages, olive groves and dramatic gorges within reach by car or organised excursion. Sarakina Gorge is a popular option for walkers when conditions are suitable. Overall, Ierapetra suits couples, independent travellers and anyone looking for a warmer, quieter side of Crete with a practical resort base and plenty of authentic local character.
