Koutouloufari is a traditional hillside village in the Heraklion region of Crete, set just above the livelier coastal resort of Hersonissos. It is a good choice if you want easy access to the coast but prefer to stay somewhere with a quieter, more village-like feel. Narrow lanes, stone houses, courtyards, small churches and views towards the sea give the resort plenty of character, while its compact centre makes it easy to explore on foot.

The main appeal of Koutouloufari is its relaxed atmosphere. Evenings tend to revolve around tavernas, rooftop terraces and small bars rather than big clubs. Koutouloufari does not have its own beach, as it sits inland and uphill. The nearest beaches are down in Hersonissos, where you will find organised stretches of sand and shingle, beach bars and small coves around the coastline. The walk down is possible for many visitors, but the return is uphill, so taxis are useful, especially in the heat. Stalis and Malia are also within reach for longer beach days.

Things to do locally include wandering between Koutouloufari, Piskopiano and Old Hersonissos, three neighbouring villages with traditional architecture and laid-back places to eat. Down by the coast, Hersonissos has a harbour, shops and a wider choice of bars. Nearby attractions include the Lychnostatis Open Air Museum, which gives an insight into Cretan rural life, and Aquaworld Aquarium in Hersonissos.

Koutouloufari also works well as a base for exploring central and eastern Crete. Popular day trips include Heraklion city, the Palace of Knossos, the Lassithi Plateau, Agios Nikolaos and boat trips towards Spinalonga. A hire car gives the most flexibility, though organised excursions are widely available from the surrounding resorts. Overall, Koutouloufari suits holidaymakers looking for Cretan charm, good food and sea views, with the livelier coast close by when wanted.
