About Malia holidays

Malia is one of Crete’s best-known resorts, set on the island’s north coast in the Heraklion region. It has a lively, youthful feel in the summer months, especially around the famous Malia Strip, but there is more to the resort than its nightlife. With long sandy beaches, a traditional old town and easy access to historic sights, it suits holidaymakers who want a mix of sun, socialising and a few cultural days out.

The main beach at Malia is a broad stretch of sand with shallow water, sunbeds, beach bars and water sports during the season. It is convenient for the resort centre and has a busy, sociable atmosphere. Quieter spots can usually be found further along the coast, including towards Potamos Beach, which is close to the archaeological site and has a more relaxed setting. The coastline here is well suited to lazy beach days, swimming and casual seaside lunches.

Malia’s nightlife is a major draw. The Strip is packed with bars and clubs in peak summer, attracting a younger crowd and a late-night party scene. Away from this area, the old town offers a more laid-back side of the resort, with tavernas, cocktail bars and narrow lanes that feel much more traditional. Restaurants range from simple Greek tavernas serving grilled meats, seafood and Cretan dishes to international options aimed at visitors.

One of the most worthwhile places to visit is the Minoan Palace of Malia, an important archaeological site just outside the resort. It is smaller and generally less crowded than Knossos, but still gives a fascinating look at Crete’s ancient past. Malia is also well placed for exploring more of north-east Crete, with Hersonissos, Stalis and Agios Nikolaos within reach for day trips. Boat trips, quad bike tours and excursions into the Cretan countryside are also popular from the area.

Malia is best suited to travellers who want a beach holiday with plenty going on, particularly in summer. Couples and groups looking for quieter evenings may prefer staying nearer the old town or on the edges of the resort, while those coming for nightlife will find the central strip the most convenient base.
