Plakias Holidays

Plakias is a relaxed resort on Crete’s south coast, set around a wide bay with mountains rising behind it. It has grown from a small fishing village into a laid-back holiday base, but it still feels much quieter than the larger resorts on the north coast. Holidays here suit travellers who want beach time, good local food and easy access to dramatic Cretan scenery rather than a busy nightlife scene.

The main beach at Plakias is long, spacious and backed by a seafront road with cafés, tavernas and small shops. The water is generally clear, and there are organised sections with sunbeds as well as quieter stretches if you prefer more space. The eastern end of the bay is more open and can feel breezy at times, which is worth bearing in mind on windy days. Nearby beaches such as Damnoni, Ammoudi, Schinaria and Souda give you plenty of variety, with coves and sheltered swimming spots within a short drive or taxi ride.

The resort centre is compact and easy to get around on foot. Evenings tend to revolve around waterfront meals, Cretan dishes, fresh seafood and a drink overlooking the bay. Nightlife is low-key, with a few bars and music spots rather than clubs, making Plakias a good choice for couples, friends and independent travellers looking for a calm atmosphere.

There is plenty to do beyond the beach. Walkers can explore coastal paths, hillside villages such as Myrthios and Sellia, and the striking gorges in the surrounding area. Preveli, known for its palm-fringed river and beach, is one of the best-known day trips nearby, while the monastery of Preveli adds historic interest. Hiring a car is useful if you want to discover the south coast at your own pace, though local buses and excursions can also help with getting around.

Plakias is best for a slower, scenic Crete holiday with good beaches, tavernas and a genuine village-resort feel.
