About Sissi holidays

Sissi is a small, easy-going resort on Crete’s north coast, known for its pretty harbour, waterfront tavernas and relaxed village feel. It sits between the busier resorts of Malia and Agios Nikolaos, making it a good choice if you want a quieter base with the option to explore more of eastern Crete.

The heart of Sissi is its sheltered harbour, where fishing boats bob beside café terraces and restaurants. Evenings tend to be gentle rather than lively, with visitors lingering over seafood, grilled meats, meze and local wine. There are a few low-key bars, but Sissi is not a clubbing resort; those looking for late nights usually head towards nearby Malia.

Beach time is part of the appeal, though the coastline here is more varied and rocky than in some larger Cretan resorts. Boufos Beach is the best-known local beach, with a mix of sand, shingle and clear water. There are also smaller coves and bathing spots around the village, plus more spacious sandy beaches a short drive or taxi ride away towards Malia. Sea shoes can be useful in places where the seabed is pebbly or rocky.

Sissi suits holidaymakers who enjoy a slower pace: harbour walks, long lunches, swimming, boat trips in season and exploring nearby villages. It is also well placed for sightseeing. The Minoan Palace of Malia is close by and offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient Crete, while Milatos Cave and the Lassithi Plateau make worthwhile inland excursions. Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and trips towards Spinalonga are also popular day-out options from this part of the island.

The resort has the essentials for a comfortable stay, including tavernas, cafés, mini-markets and car hire options, but it remains relatively compact. A hire car is useful if you want to discover beaches, archaeological sites and mountain villages at your own pace. For a peaceful Cretan holiday with good food, coastal scenery and easy access to bigger-name sights, Sissi is a charming and practical choice.
