About Stalis holidays

Stalis, also known as Stalida, is a relaxed beach resort on Crete’s north coast, set between livelier Hersonissos and Malia in the Heraklion region. It suits holidaymakers who want an easy-going Cretan base with plenty of places to eat and drink, but without the full-on pace of its bigger neighbours.

The resort is best known for its long sandy beach, which shelves gently into the sea in many places. This makes it popular with couples and families looking for simple days by the water. Sunbeds, parasols and beachfront cafés are widely available in season, while the seafront promenade and main resort road keep shops, tavernas and bars close at hand. Parts of the beach can get busy in summer, but the overall atmosphere is generally informal and friendly.

Eating out is one of the main pleasures of a holiday in Stalis. You’ll find traditional Greek tavernas serving dishes such as grilled meats, fresh fish, meze and Cretan salads, alongside international restaurants, cafés and casual snack bars. Evenings tend to be sociable rather than wild, with cocktail bars, music bars and seafront spots for a relaxed drink. If you want bigger clubs or a busier night out, Malia and Hersonissos are both nearby by taxi or local bus.

Stalis is also a practical base for exploring more of central and eastern Crete. The Minoan Palace of Knossos and the museums, shops and harbour of Heraklion are popular day trips. Closer to the resort, the Lychnostatis Open Air Museum near Hersonissos gives an insight into Cretan rural life and traditions. Inland, villages such as Mochos offer a more traditional feel, with mountain views and local tavernas. Many visitors also take excursions towards Agios Nikolaos, Spinalonga or the Lassithi Plateau.

Overall, Stalis is a good choice if you want a straightforward beach holiday with a comfortable resort feel, reliable dining options and easy access to some of Crete’s best-known sights.
