About Argostoli holidays

Argostoli is the lively capital of Kefalonia and one of the island’s most convenient bases for a Greek island holiday. Set around a sheltered natural harbour, it has a relaxed waterfront feel, with fishing boats, cafés, shops and evening strolls all forming part of daily life. It suits travellers who want plenty close at hand without staying in a purpose-built beach resort.

The seafront is a good place to start. In the mornings, visitors often head to the harbour area to watch local fishermen and, with luck, spot loggerhead turtles in the water. The long De Bosset Bridge links the town with the opposite side of Koutavos Lagoon and is a pleasant walk, especially early or late in the day when it is cooler. Around the centre, Lithostroto pedestrian street and Vallianou Square are the main spots for shopping, coffee, ice cream and people-watching.

Argostoli itself is more harbour town than beach resort, but several good beaches are within easy reach. The sandy beaches of Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos in nearby Lassi are among the most popular, with clear water and facilities in season. Smaller coves such as Kalamia are also close by, making it easy to combine town life with beach time.

Eating out is one of Argostoli’s strengths. You will find traditional tavernas, seafood restaurants, bakeries, gelato shops and modern cafés, with plenty of choice for casual lunches and relaxed dinners. Evenings are sociable rather than wild, centred on bars, waterfront drinks and the main square rather than large nightclubs.

For sightseeing, local highlights include the Korgialenio Historic and Folklore Museum, the Fanari lighthouse area and the unusual Katavothres sea mills just outside town. Argostoli is also a practical base for exploring the rest of Kefalonia, with car hire, boat trips and excursions available to places such as Myrtos Beach, Assos, Fiskardo, Melissani Cave and the Robola wine-growing area. A short ferry crossing to Lixouri also makes the Paliki peninsula easy to visit.

Argostoli Holidays FAQs

Yes. Argostoli is a good choice if you want a lively but relaxed base with restaurants, shops, harbour views and easy access to beaches and excursions. It is less of a traditional beach resort than nearby Lassi, but it offers more town facilities and local atmosphere.
