About Kefalonia holidays

Kefalonia is one of the most scenic of the Ionian Islands, known for its dramatic coastline, green mountains and relaxed resort towns. It suits holidaymakers who want a beach break with plenty of places to explore by car, from fishing villages and sea caves to hilltop viewpoints and traditional tavernas.

The island’s beaches are a major draw, and they vary widely in character. Myrtos is the famous showpiece, with bright white pebbles, turquoise water and cliffs rising behind it. Antisamos, near Sami, is another striking bay backed by wooded hills, while Xi Beach is known for its reddish sand and clay cliffs. Lourdas and Skala offer long stretches of coast with a good choice of restaurants nearby, making them practical bases for a relaxed holiday.

Kefalonia’s resorts each have a different feel. Lassi is close to the island capital, Argostoli, and is convenient for beaches, bars and restaurants without feeling too large. Skala is popular for its broad beach, seafront dining and easy-going atmosphere. Sami is well placed for ferries, caves and boat trips, while Fiskardo in the north is a pretty harbour village with colourful waterfront buildings and a more upmarket feel. Assos is smaller and especially picturesque, set on a narrow isthmus below a Venetian fortress.

Away from the coast, Kefalonia has a rugged interior dominated by Mount Ainos, a national park where walking routes offer views across the island and, on clear days, towards neighbouring islands. Melissani Cave, with its underground lake, and Drogarati Cave near Sami are among the best-known natural sights. Argostoli is worth visiting for its harbour, pedestrianised centre, cafés and the chance to spot turtles around the waterfront.

Food is a highlight of a Kefalonia holiday, particularly if you enjoy simple Greek cooking. Expect grilled fish, local meat pies, fresh salads, olive oil, honey and Robola wine produced on the island. Many resorts have family-run tavernas, while harbour villages are ideal for long lunches by the water. Overall, Kefalonia offers a laid-back Greek island holiday with beautiful beaches, memorable scenery and enough variety for both peaceful stays and active days out.

Kefalonia Holidays FAQs

It depends on the style of holiday you want. Lassi is convenient for beaches and Argostoli, Skala has a long beach and plenty of restaurants, Sami is useful for caves and boat trips, while Fiskardo and Assos are best for a quieter, more scenic harbour-village feel.
