Skala is one of Kefalonia’s most popular beach resorts, set on the island’s south-east coast with a relaxed, easy-going feel. It suits holidaymakers who want a straightforward Greek island break: a long beach, plenty of places to eat, and enough to do without the pace feeling hectic.

The main draw is Skala Beach, a wide stretch of sand and shingle backed by low hills and greenery. The water is usually clear and inviting, and parts of the beach have sunbeds and parasols, while quieter sections are easy to find if you prefer more space. The seabed can shelve in places and there are pebbly patches, so swim shoes can be useful. Along the seafront and around the resort you’ll find cafés, tavernas and beach bars for lunch, drinks and sunset views.

Skala’s centre is compact and simple to get around, with most restaurants, bars and shops clustered around the main streets leading towards the beach. Dining is a big part of evenings here, with traditional Kefalonian and Greek dishes alongside familiar international options. Nightlife is generally low-key rather than club-focused, with cocktail bars, music bars and friendly tavernas providing a sociable but relaxed atmosphere.

There are a few interesting sights close to the resort, including the remains of a Roman villa with mosaic floors. Walkers can head inland towards Old Skala, the hillside settlement abandoned after the 1953 earthquake, for views over the coast and countryside. Boat trips are also popular, whether along the local coastline, to secluded swimming spots or to nearby islands depending on the season and operator.

Skala is a good base for seeing more of Kefalonia by car or organised excursion. Poros is a short journey away, while island highlights such as Mount Ainos, Melissani Lake, Drogarati Cave and the harbour villages of the east coast can be reached on day trips. For a classic Kefalonia holiday with a scenic beach, relaxed evenings and practical amenities, Skala is a dependable choice.
