About Kefalos holidays

Kefalos is a relaxed resort on the south-western side of Kos, set around a long bay with the old village rising on the hillside above the coast. It suits holidaymakers who want a slower pace, sea views and easy-going evenings rather than a busy party scene. The resort has a traditional feel in parts, especially in the upper village, while the beach area around Kamari is where you’ll find many of the tavernas, cafés, bars and accommodation.

The coastline is one of the main reasons people choose Kefalos. Kefalos Bay has clear, generally calm water and a mix of sand and shingle, with organised sections offering sunbeds in season as well as quieter stretches. Agios Stefanos Beach is particularly popular, not just for swimming but for the remains of an early Christian basilica beside the shore and views across to the small islet of Kastri, with its white chapel. Nearby beaches such as Paradise Beach and other coves along the south coast are also easy to reach by car, taxi or local excursion.

Food and drink in Kefalos is pleasantly low-key. Expect Greek tavernas serving grilled fish, souvlaki, salads, meze and local dishes, along with casual cafés and seafront bars for a drink after dinner. Nightlife is modest, centred on friendly bars rather than clubs, making it a good choice for couples, families and anyone who prefers quieter evenings.

There are several simple ways to spend your days beyond the beach. You can wander through Kefalos village for views over the bay, visit the ruins at Agios Stefanos, take a boat trip, try snorkelling in clear water or hire a car to explore more of western Kos. Plaka Forest, Antimachia Castle and the island’s main town are all possible day trips, depending on how far you want to travel.

Kefalos is best for a laid-back Greek island holiday with attractive beaches, scenic views and a traditional atmosphere. It has enough restaurants and bars for comfort, but it remains quieter than Kos Town and the island’s livelier resorts.
